Research

There are over 4,500 scientists at the Charité Medical Faculty engaged in frontier biomedical re-search in countless projects, working groups and cooperations. The focus here is on translational interaction of experimental, molecular biological basic research with patient-oriented clinical appli-cation. On this basis, in 2013 the Faculty raised more than 148 million Euros from public and pri-vate investors (“third-party funds) to finance its research activities. This enabled it to secure a top position among the medical faculties in Germany and become the leader in Europe.

There already exist a large number of Charité research areas that are distinguished by national and international collaborative projects as well as interdisciplinary cooperations. In six selected areas, the Charité is striving for a top position in the national and international research rankings, thus focusing on the following areas of research:

  • Immunological sciences
  • Cardiovascular research and metabolism
  • Neurosciences
  • Oncology
  • Regenerative Therapies
  • Rare diseases and genetics

The “Berlin Institute of Health (BIH)” research area jointly operated with the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) thereby complements the Charité research activities in a scientific focus on system medicine unique in Germany.

Particular emphasis is placed on the promotion of young researchers – notably young scientists. Moreover, the Charité is developing its own support programs and has set up various graduate academies, in which young scientists can undergo further qualification and specialization.
